"Studio at Night"

"Studio at Night"
oil on board, 6x6"

I took some photos at night of my little 5 sided studio (Yes, the walls lean out...). Last night the moon was out and the light came out so great. This is a small painting and I might eventually do a large version. I just wanted to see how it would come out. It's an unusual space and very interesting to paint with it's oddities. Below is the real thing before we added a deck.

We had some gold and green eggs from the neighbor chickens and I loved the colors this egg reflected. Hopefully we will have beautiful eggs of our own soon.

"Singing Bowl"

"Singing Bowl"
oil on board, 8x8"
SOLD

We have been working very hard this summer on a building a very small meditation studio, a place for peace of mind and I was searching for the perfect singing bowl. I happened to find it this summer at our local festival and thought it was a perfect thing to paint today. Having been a classical musician for most of my life, the sound of this had to have just the right pitch and overtones for my ears. It's a beauty. Wish you could hear it...

"Meet Flappy"

"Meet Flappy"
oil on board, 8x8"
SOLD
This is Flappy. He wanted some blackberries... Obviously I wasn't quick enough with the blackberries. We now have 10 chickens and are enjoying every minute with them. They crack me up everyday and are adding comedy to my life. I'm sure they will show up in my paintings. We think Flappy might be a rooster but we just aren't sure just yet... (Updated photo 8/27)

"I Got Nothin' "

"I Got Nothin" "
ode  to Suzanne Berry
oil on board, 6x6"
$75 plus $10 shipping

I've been looking at some of my favorite blogs and I noticed Suzanne Berry (check out her great work!) had been struggling with what to paint after this series of wonderful bugs she had been working on. Then she crumpled up some paper and ending up painting that, and beautifully I might add. Anyway, that's what I felt like when I went to paint today -  I got nothin'. I set up some corn, but couldn't get it to look right, thought about another Master study but didn't have the time so I looked at the paper from my gessoboard all crumpled up and liked the reflection on my cherry floor. So here it is.

painting the Masters- The Reader

after The Reader by Jean-Honore Fragonard
oil on paper, 14x14"
study NFS

I am going to embark on painting a version of a few of my very favorite paintings over the next month or so. They will probably be intermixed with my regular daily paintings. I've wanted to do this for a while and thought the fall was just the time. I love this painting by Fragonard. I think it is my favorite of all time. Given a longer time to paint in a day I might try this again including book and dress etc. It's just so beautiful. I saw it in person at the Impressionist exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum last year (where they had earlier works and the later works that these works influenced) and could have stood there for hours, drawn in by color mostly. My version has some drawing issues with the length of her face but I really enjoyed working on the remarkable color and tones in her face.

"Sungold Tomatoes"

"Sungold Tomatoes"
oil on board, 6x6"
$100 plus $10 shipping

These pretty little tomatoes came from my garden and are so sweet they almost taste like grapes. I'm so glad for the sun and heat we've had this summer such that we could have tomatoes without having a greenhouse. Yum.

"Deep Bark"

"Deep Bark"
oil on board, 12x24"
sold
I liked the small image of my tree so much that I decided it was worth combining a few reference photos to get more of the tree's bark and to do a much larger painting of it. I think I've got the basics down but am going to put in some more small details later and add some depth to the colors.

"Grand Fir"

"Grand Fir"
oil on board, 8x10"
SOLD

I am a huge tree fan, especially when they are giant. This Grand Fir is in my Mom's yard and I tried to capture it by standing very close to the bottom. Somehow, like the Redwoods, nothing is quite like being there and standing close and feeling the smallness humans rarely feel.

"Just Picked"

"Just Picked"
oil on board, 6x6"
SOLD

This onion came from the organic garden that is run by the multi-age classes at my daughter's school. The kids work in it all year and can take a few things during the summer when the produce is ready. I just had to paint this one, roots and all, before we cooked it. I love the idea of the kids learning about gardening at school as well as home. They are all so proud of their hard work and should be. It's part of why we moved to our beautiful island.

"Wind and Waves"

"Wind and Waves"
oil on board, 8x10"
$250 plus $10 shipping

Here is my more complete version of the beauty on the beach. It is not as large as I had tried originally but I realized it was easier to start again and I only had smaller size boards. The blues are a little more subtle in real life and a bit more purple but I had trouble adjusting. I may update the photo tomorrow. (Updated Aug.18)

"Lone Sunflower"

"Lone Sunflower"
oil on board, 8x8"
$75 plus $10 shipping

Still studying my vase of sunflowers. One was all alone and off to the side with sun just on part.
It may be more of a study than a finished work  as I am trying to capture them in certain light. Maybe morning light will be best.

Just had time for a quick study this morning but may get back to it later for a more in depth look. I love sunflowers.

"Curls in the Wind"

"Curls in the Wind"
oil on board, 6x6"
SOLD

This is a small study for a larger painting of this girl on the beach with beautiful curly hair. I started the big work today but decided I needed to paint a version of her face and hair first to get the right shapes. I really like how it turned out and have high hopes for the bigger version.

Back Again

For those of you who follow, I apologize for the break but I had to leave town for a funeral suddenly. I am back now and SO glad to get back to the paints.... Check back later.

"Ladybug and Drops"

"Ladybug and Drops"
oil on board. 6x6"
$100 plus $10 shipping

It's finally cool outside for the first time in months so I ended up painting from a photo on my computer as it seemed cozy this morning. I took this photo about 5 years ago when we had a huge flower bed of poppies and  hundreds of ladybugs appeared. This one was thirsty and I caught it just right. I love the photo as well but it was fun to paint the reflections and the water drops.

"Bob in the Box"

"Bob in the Box"
oil on board, 8x10"
SOLD
My cat Bob loves a box, no matter what size. I love to put out a small box just to see what he does. Cats crack me up... Still wishing and hoping for Saturn's safe return.
